A mobile court in Chittagong convicted 161 fishermen with 15 days imprisonment for catching of Hilsa fish during the breeding period that prohibited by the authority earlier. Executive Magistrate of Chittagong district administration Tamim Al Yameen announced this punishment on Friday.
Sources said coast guard forces apprehended 180 fishermen from the outer berth of Chittagong port during their drive from Thursday night to Friday morning. Mobile court Magistrate said under the fish preservation Act of 1950 , these fishermen were given punishment with 15 days jail terms and the convicts sent to jail.
The seized hilsa fishes have been distributed to different orphan houses in city and the fishing boats handed over to Marine Fisheries Servillance checkpost, sources added.
Sources said the anti-hilsa fishing raid will continue upto October 5 next.
Mentionable that patrol team of Chittagong Coast Guard , East zone seized 2500 kgs of Hilsa fish and twelve wooden engine boats alongwith 180 fishermen from the outer berth of Chittagong Port on Thursday . In their special drive conducted from midnight of Thursday upto Friday.Sources said each fishing boat was loaded with on average 200 kgs of hilsa.
Coast guard official of East zone M.Durul Huda confirmed the seizure of prohibited hilsa fish . Govt has imposed ban on Hilsa fish catching in the sea from 25 september for 15 days . The prohibition area for hilsa fishing earmarked from Lakhipur, Ramgati to Chandpur estuary upto Meghna .
Sources said this earmarked period is the breedding time for mother Hilsa fishes . During the period, fishing, transporatation, preservation and marketting of hilsa is prohibited. The detained fishermen were handed over to Patenga thana.
Mentionable that early on Tuesday , 4 0 fishermen were caught redhanded from the port channel alongwith 600 kgs of Hilsa by the coast guard forces, sources said.
