At least 16 human skeletons were stolen from a graveyard at Ashulia in Savar, outskirt of the capital Dhaka.
Locals said the skeletons were stolen at sometime early Sunday from ‘Jannatul Baqui’ graveyard at village Gohailbari under the upazila.
A written complaint was lodged with Ashulia Police Station in this regard. One Ridoy Ahmed said they found more than a dozen of graves were empty reaching the graveyard to bury his cousin sister Rezia’s body in the morning. Later, they found that the human skeletons were missing from 16 graves. Instantly, they informed the Ashulia Police Station about the matter. Receiving information, Ashulia police arrived at the graveyard and visited the empty graves.
Sona Mia Sarker, member of the Ward No. 1 of Shimulia Union Parishad, said the ‘theives’ had entered the graveyard sometime after Saturday midnight and stolen the human skeletons from 16 old graves. The matter came to the notice of locals when they went there to bury the dead body of a woman. Later, they informed the local union parishad.
The union parishad member further said preparations were going on to lodge a written complaint with Ashulia Police Station.
He said though there was a boundary around the graveyard, some portion of it were opened.
Ashulia Police Station’s sub-inspector Yunus said they visited the spot hearing about the missing of 16 human skeletons. Police would investigate the incident after receiving a written complaint, he said.
