Some 16 fishermen were arrested along with 10 fishing trawlers by the members of the patrolling team of the Forest Department from the Eastern Division of Sundarban forest on the charge of illegal intrusion in the forest and catching fish from there on Thursday.
Those fishermen were arrested on the day in the morning from Chandeswar and Mjherchar areas under Sharankhola Forest Range. It was confirmed by Mehedi Hasan Khan, Chief of Sharankhola Smart Patrolling team and Bio-diversity Protection Officer.
It is learnt from the forest department that after the repeated fire incidents taken place in the different places of the Eastern Division of Sundarban forest the forest department banned the issue of all kinds of passes and permits to enter into the forest. After that a Smart Patrolling team of international standard was formed by the forest department in order to save Sundarbans, the biggest man grove forest of the world and one of the world the world heritages. On June 25 the ban was withdrawn by the forest department. Taking this opportunity those fishermen entered into the forest and began to catch fish from there without the permission from the forest department. On Thursday the members of the Smarting Patrolling team arrested 12 fishermen along with 6 fishing trawlers from Chandeswar area of Sharankhola range. On the same day the smarting patrolling team also arrested 4 fishermen along with 4 fishing trawlers from Mjherchar area of the river Baleswar under the same forest range. But some of the fishermen managed to escape into the deep forest. The members of the Smarting Patrolling team are trying to arrest them. The arrested fishermen hail from the different places of Patharghata Upazila in Barguna district.

In this connection 2 separate cases were r lodged with local Police Station against the arrested fishermen u/s 26/1 (A) under the Forest Act .
