SM Mizanur Rahman :
A total of 159 Bangladeshi trafficking victims will be brought back home from Myanmar on August 5.
The date of scheduled return was July 30. But they could not be repatriated due to the cyclonic storm that hit the coastal areas on Thursday night.
Earlier, Myanmar rescued the Bangladeshi trafficking victims from the sea.
Talking to The New Nation on Friday, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)-17 commander Lieutenant Colonel M Rabiul Islam Rabi said that they were ready to bring them back home on Thursday, but they could not do so due to rough weather caused by cyclonic storm “Komen”.
“As all our proceedings have already been completed, we are expecting them to return home on August 5,” he said, adding they would get a positive response from Myanmar side.
He added that they had already sent a letter to the Immigration and National Registration Department in Myanmar to inform them to repatriate 159 Bangladeshi trafficking victims on August 5.
“After a flag meeting with Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP), we have been sure that all the 159 trafficking victims rescued by Myanmar Navy are Bangladesh nationals,”
Earlier on July 22, a total of 155 Bangladeshi trafficking victims were brought back home, 150 on June 8 and 37 and on June 19.
