A person’s iPhone set was stolen from the Uttara Central Jame Mosque in the capital recently. The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) discovered a ring of thieves while investigating.
Later, on Monday and Tuesday (May 16-17), DB arrested 8 members of the ring along with 158 stolen mobile phone sets in a series of raids in different areas under Uttara West Police Station.
The members of the arrested ring are identified as Monir Hossain (28), Md. Motahar Hossain (55), Md. Suruj Hossain (22), Md. Shahjalal (23), Md. Mehedi Hasan (20), Kumar Sunny (25), Md. Hridoy (25) and Shamim Osman (19). During the operation, 158 mobile phone sets, a laptop and cash of Tk 118,000 were recovered from them. During the preliminary interrogation, the arrested accused confessed to being involved in organized gangs including theft of mobile phones in different places of the capital. A K M Hafiz Akter, Additional Commissioner and Chief of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), disclosed this at a press conference at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Wednesday (May 18).
He said the thieves were motivated by the sale of stolen mobile phone sets. Due to this, incidents of mobile theft and snatching are increasing. Though , the accused have been arrested in connection with the theft of mobile phones, but they generally get released very soon. After coming out of jail, they began to repeat the same thing, DB chief said. At the request of mobile traders and sellers, he said, “You may sell old mobile sets. No problem. But stolen mobiles cannot be sold or stored in any way. If anyone is found with a stolen mobile phone, we will take strict legal action against them.
