This is the worst flood in recorded history in Sylhet division. According to the information of LGED, most of the affected roads and culverts are in the four districts of Sylhet Division, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. In these four districts, 1,526 kilometers of roads have been damaged, which is 85 percent of the total roads damaged in the country due to this flood. Among them, damage is more in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. Maximum 647 kilometers of roads have been damaged in Sylhet district. 555 kilometers of roads have been damaged in Sunamganj district.
There have been three floods in Sunamganj this time. All the upazilas of Sunamganj were inundated with flood water in the third phase of flood that started from last June 15. After the flood waters receded, it is seen that the Sunamganj-Bishwambharpur-Tahirpur, Sunamganj-Jamalganj, Sunamganj-Doarabazar, Sunamganj-Jagannathpur, Sunamganj-Dirai roads are in bad shape. Hasnabad, Kalaruka area of Chatak-Gobindganj road of Chatak Upazila has suffered heavy damage. The union and rural roads of various upazilas are also broken.
In recent years, the same road has been repeatedly damaged by floods. The government has to spend extra money on this.
According to the government, 40 thousand 91 houses have been damaged in Sylhet district due to ongoing floods. But in reality the number of damaged houses is more, Banvasi said. So far only 6000 houses have been allocated for reconstruction or renovation. According to government estimates, only 15 percent of affected house owners received this grant.
After the flood, the fences of many houses were washed away by the current of water. Someone’s fence and tin rice were knocked over. Many houses have been destroyed. Many are not receiving government assistance. Many people are not able to rebuild their houses due to lack of money. In this situation, many are homeless and living in other people’s houses.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Md. Mojibor Rahman said that all the affected houses listed by the government will get financial assistance. The Social Development Foundation (SDF) of the Ministry of Finance is allocating Tk 6 crore for the construction of houses in Kanaighat and Goainghat upazilas of the district soon. Phase by stage, the owners of the affected houses will be allocated for house construction or renovation.
Sylhet was hit by the first round of floods last May. After that, the second flood started on June 15. At least 30 percent of the district is still under flood conditions.
After the highest rainfall in 64 years in June in Sylhet, this time a record has been created in the heat wave. The temperature in Sylhet rose to 38.9 degrees Celsius on July 14. Which is a record of 66 years in July,

Sylhet’s temperature was 37.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and 36.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. And people are gasping in this record temperature. Apart from cities, villages, people everywhere are suffering from the intensity of heat. Day and night equal heat. Due to abnormal heat, people often get sick from house to house with various diseases including fever, cold and cough, respiratory problems, skin diseases, diarrhea. Hospital-clinic, doctor’s chamber is increasing the number of patients. Workers including rickshaw pullers, van drivers, hawkers are in trouble. Meanwhile, load shedding has increased the intensity of the suffering. According to the information of the Meteorological Office, a mild heat wave has been flowing over the Sylhet division for the past few days.
