Ahsanul Amin George, Khulna :The sudden embankment collapse on Wednesday afternoon on the rivers Kapotakhha and Shibsha at Horiharpur and Kalabogi in Koyra and Dakop upazilas under the district has affected at least six villages and round 15000 people have marooned due to the flash flood and dyke collapsing.Over 1000 acres of paddy field and around 700 shrimp enclosures have been washed away, said local public representatives.Several families have taken shelter in other villages as their houses went under water. North Bedkashi UP Chairman Sarder Nurul Islam said, Villages in Bedkashi union were flooded. If the repair work is not done within a short span of time, the flood water is likely to reach Koyra upazila.At least three villages under the same upazila have been flooded, said Nurul Islam.The three villages are : Horihorpur, Patirgheri and Paddopukur.The homeless Alimuddin Gazi, Motiar Gazi, Kolimuddin, Golejan Begum and Beauty Begum have taken shelter over Wapda embankment.Harun Gazi, Abdur Rahim Mollick, Afroza Begum and Nomita Rani of Horihorpur village said, “suddenly the embankment collapsed and most of our croplands, fish enclosures, cattle and poultry and other valuables washed away, we are living inhuman lives without getting food and other necessaries.” Faruk Ahmed, Dub-divisional Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) said, We have heard the news of embankment collapse, but due to fund crisis renovation work would not be possible.Md. Bodiuzzaman, UNO of Koyra upazila said, “Embankment collapse is a common matter during this period, due to inclement weather in the Bay, flash flood caused the embankment collapse.”At least three villages of Dakop upazila were also inundated in the flash flood and sudden collapse of Kalabogi embankment in the river Shibsha on Wednesday afternoon. Three villages which were flooded are – Kalabogi, Suterkhali and Nolian. Masum Ali Fakir, UP chairman of Kalabogi Union said, three villages were inundated due to sudden collapse of the embankment and at least 500 families of the two villages have marooned.Selim Abed, Shipon Bhuyan, Biswjit Das, Roksana Begum and Maloti Bala of village Suterkhali said, We are now in haphazard condition due to sudden embankment collapse, our crop lands, ghers (fishenclosures), ponds, houses were flooded.
