At least 150 shops and shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out at a ‘Jhut Patti’ (garment scraps trading area) in Mirpur, Dhaka on Saturday.Fire Services Control Room in-Charge Enayet Hossain said that fire originated from an electric short circuit around 12:00 noon and soon it spread to the other shops and adjoining shanties.On information, six fire engines from Mirpur, Kurmitola and Ramna reached the spot and doused the flame around 2:00pm after two hours of frantic effort, he said.Pallabi Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syed Ziauzzaman said that fire had gutted over 150 shops and shanties.He further said that the extent of losses caused by the fire was believed to be Tk 5 lakh.
