Teesta erosion takes serious turn: 150 houses devoured

Erosion by the mighty River Teesta has taken a serious turn at Gangachara Upazila in the district for the 20 days devouring around 150 houses in the upazila.
Besides, a vast tract of crop lands including paddy and vegetable fields have also gone under water, making the farmers apprehensive about recovering the loss they have already incurred.
Moreover, a good number of dwelling houses, educational institutions and many other establishments are facing serious threat of extinction, local sources said.
Locals apprehended massive loss, if the situation continues for one or two weeks.
The most affected villages include Chilkhal, Baghdohra,char Nohali, Paikan Hajipara, Bangpara, Pirpara, Paschimpara, Soudpara, Purbo Mahipur, Char Chilkhal.
The people of affected areas are now facing acute crisis of food, shelter and medical. Hundred of victims are now living on the bank of the river and passing days miserably.
Some affected people of Chilkhal village said Teesta has devoured their of crop lands and homesteads during last couple of weeks .
They are yet to get any assistance from neither the government nor any non government organisations. Some affected people said the relief goods they were given were not sufficient.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer(UNO), Aminul Islam said they have already visited the affected areas and distributed relief goods including dried food among the erosion-hit people.
Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Rangpur Mahbubur Rahman said they are trying to take necessary measures in this regard.
Social movement against terrorism, militancy stressed
The pro-liberation forces, socio-cultural organisations, Imams, Olama-Mashaekhs and religious leaders should launch social movement unitedly at all levels involving the common people to resist terrorism and militancy.
The opinion came at the meeting of the District Terrorism and Militancy Resistance Committee (DTMRC) held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner at his conference room here on Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar presided over the meeting participated by the district level officials and executives of different government and non-government departments and organisations, politicians, civil society members, freedom fighters and elite.
Zila Parishad Administrator and Acting President of district Awami League (AL) Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its General Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, city AL General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, Additional Police Super Abdullah Al Faruk, Civil Surgeon Dr Himangshu Lal Roy, Chief Executive Officer of Rangpur City Corporation Ruhul Amin, addressed the meeting among others.
The meeting strongly condemned the recent terrorist and militant attacks and killings of the innocent foreigners and local citizens at Gulshan and Sholakia, terrorism, militancy, fundamentalist extremism, secret and targeted killings and in the country.
The meeting took decision to form Terrorism and Militancy Resistance
Committees at the upazila, union and ward levels and exchanging views with the students of different schools, colleges and madrashas throughout the district.
The meeting also decided to set up close circuit cameras in all important places in Rangpur City Corporation area.
‘Para’ and ‘Moholla’ based committees involving the common people for
resisting militancy, terrorism and secret killings to establish permanent peace in the society to maintain the current pace of development.
The speakers called for launching a vigorous movement against terrorism, militancy and fundamentalist extremism, secret and targeted killings of the innocent people to ensure sustainable peace in the society and maintain the current pace of national development.
