15 vehicles were robbed by throwing tree trunks on the road during the daylight in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar. The incident took place at around 9am on Saturday (June 18) in the Matir Bank area on the Teknaf-Huaikeng Shyamlapur Road. Six people were injured in the attack.
According to the victims, a group of 15 to 20 masked robbers threw tree trunks on the road at around 9 am and obstructed the movement of vehicles. They looted 15 vehicles including autorickshaws and motorcycles with heavy weapons and long spears and carried out robbery for hours. The robbers looted the passengers’ money, gold ornaments, mobile sets and other belongings.
Autorickshaw driver Aminul Islam and several passengers were injured in the beating. The victim, autorickshaw driver Aminul Islam, said the robbery was due to police negligence. Robbers threw tree trunks on the road in broad daylight and took away my mobile phone and money. The robbers robbed items worth Tk 20 lakh from 10-15 vehicles here, he said.
Another victim, Nazir Ahmed Shant, an NGO worker, said members of the robber gang slapped him twice and took away important office files, mobile phones and tk 30,000 in cash. Robberies are taking place in broad daylight, the police are not watching. The police just came and went in the name of patrolling. Where is our security?
Nur Mohammad, inspector of the Baharchhara police investigation center in Teknaf, said, “We rushed there after receiving the news of the robbery.” The robbers fled the scene before we left. Our operation to apprehend the robbers continues.
