At least 15 persons were injured, four of them seriously, in a clash between the supporters of two rival UP member candidates at Raninagar under Monakasha union of Shibganj upazila of the district on Sunday.
Seriously injured persons are Milon Hossain 26, Abdul Quayum 37, Shahidul Islam 25 and Fayezuddin 50. All of them hailed from Raninagar village under Monakasha union of Shibganj upazila and were admitted to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital.
Local people said the supporters of winner UP member candidate of Ward No. 4 Shukur Ali brought out a victory procession in the area at about 11.00 am and at one stage they attacked the house of defeated candidate Nurul Haque at Raninagar.
At that moment both the groups were locked in the clash. Sticks, brick bats and cocktails were used in the clash, the source said.
Receiving information Shibganj Thana police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Officer in Charge (OC) of Shibganj Thana MM Moinul Islam said additional police forces were deployed in the area.
