15 more coaches to be added at BR

Bangladesh Railway (BR) will start to add Indonesian-made stainless steel 50 new broad gauge passenger coaches to its fleet from next week as part of modernising its service.
BR would include such coaches first time, which will significantly solve the crisis of bogies and bring dynamism in the Railway service, officials said.
In first phase, 15 bogies will arrive in Chattogram Port next week and gradually 50 coaches will be added by March this year. Besides, according to the agreement, 200 meter-gauge coaches will start coming from June 2019.
These coaches are purchased from Indonesia’s state-run railway manufacturing company PT Inka under the meter gauge and broad gauge passenger coach collection project for Bangladesh Railway.
After arrival of the coaches crisis will be reduced, said Harun-Ar-Rashid, Chief Engineer of the project.
He said that the development activities of the different sectors of the railway got momentum. In addition to infrastructure development, adding the new coaches and engines will help bring more innovation in train service in the country.
All coaches will be added to the railway fleet in May next year. About 250 Broad Gauge and meter gauge coaches for Bangladesh Railway will be much richer than before, he said.
The 50 broad gauge passenger carriage will include the first class AC passenger coach four, AC chair coaches eight, decorating chair coaches 25, food car, power car (including prayer house) 5.
According to railway sources, after the completion of the coaches manufacturing, senior officials of the project visited the Indonesia 21 November last year to check up the quality of the coaches as per previous contract.
In the beginning, 15 broad gauge coaches are expected to arrive in Bangladesh in January and February of 2019.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) gave Tk 1.86 crore and Bangladesh government is spending Tk 374 crore to import 250 coaches that means the cost of each coach is Tk 5.5 crore.
