15 missing as trawler capsizes in Meghna

A trawler with 60 passengers capsized in the Meghna River in Kathbazar area of Bhairab in Kishoreganj district on Wednesday afternoon, police said. Quoting witnesses, Bhairab Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Badrul Alam said that the trawler was moving towards Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria from Bhairab and sank into the river at about 2:45pm.The reasons behind the trawler capsize could not be known immediately, the police said. At least 45 passengers rescued and 15 passengers remain missing till 7:30pm, the OC said. An additional five-member team of a fire service unit from Dhaka has begun their rescue operation around 5:35pm, he said.Two staff of the vessel Shain and Zahid were detained in this connection. On Tuesday, a cargo vessel carrying 1,300 tonnes of cement clinker also capsized in the Meghna in Chandpur after it was hit by another water vessel, sources said.
