UNB, Dhaka :
An estimated 1,531,300 people or 0.95 percent of Bangladesh’s total population of over 16 crore are leading a life of ‘modern slavery’, according to a global survey index released on Tuesday.
Within the Asia region, Bangladesh is the 11th country most vulnerable to modern slavery, says the report.
Endemic poverty, natural disasters, and widespread corruption each contribute to this vulnerability, according to the report. This was revealed in the 2016 Global Slavery Index, the flagship research report published by the Walk Free Foundation. Then again, an estimated 45.8 million men, women and children around the world are yesterday trapped in modern slavery – 28 percent more than previously estimated.
They are enslaved through human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, forced or servile marriage or commercial sexual exploitation. This estimate reflects data from a random sample,
nationally representative survey conducted by Walk Free Foundation in partnership with Gallup in 2015. The Global Slavery Index provides a map, country by country, of the estimated prevalence of modern slavery, together with information about the steps each government has taken to respond to this issue. This information allows an objective comparison and assessment of both the problem and adequacy of the response in 167 countries.
