Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing of the Election Commission (EC) Brig Gen Saidul Islam on Monday said 15 EC staff were involved in providing NID cards to Rohingyas.
“We have specific information over how many staff were involved. We are not disclosing their names for the sake of investigation. But the number is not more than 15,” he told reporters at a press conference held at his office.
The DG said EC would disclose the names in phases. “The involved staff would be brought to book soon. The EC will do everything necessary to ensure their maximum punishment.”
Brig Gen Saidul Islam said the EC has started a drive against all the irregularities and will take all necessary measures to protect the NID database.
“None will be spared. We will show zero tolerance against corruption,” he said, adding, “The EC will extend cooperation to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and intelligence agencies over the investigation of providing NID to Rihingyas.”
He said that they have so far got a list of 61 Rohingyas who tried to be voters. “We are now scrutinizing their information that how they could make the efforts and who assisted them. Action will be taken against those involved in this regard,” he warned.
