After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, a 15 day long Boisakhi Mela organised by Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), and Bangla Academy started on Tuesday on the premises of Bangla Academy.
On the occasion of Bangla New Year, it will continue till 28 April with 100 stalls of different handicraft and cottage industries products. The fair will remain open from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm everyday.
Industrial Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun inaugurated the fair on Tuesday. Director General of Bangla Academy and acclaimed poet Muhammad Nurul Huda presided over the function.
Md Mahbubor Rahman, Chairman, BSCIC, delivered the welcome address at the opening ceremony.
State minister for Cultural Affairs K M Khalid, Secretary to Ministry of Industry, Zakia Sultana and Secretary to Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Abul Mansur were present as special guests at the occasion.
“We have a history of thousand years of rich tradition. By this time we have lost a lot of things. However, we have regained some of them through the Boisakhi Mela,” Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said.
“Boisakhi Mela is an integral part of the Bengali cultural and heritage. Although this fair has been being organized in rural areas for thousands of years, nowadays it also being held in urban areas. The Baishakhi Mela held on the premises of Bangla Academy is an example of it,” he added.
