Police arrested 15 admission seekers of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday when they were demonstrating to hold a discussion with university authorities for a second chance for admission test. The students gathered at Teachers Students Center (TSC) area around 11 am in a bid to force the DU Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique to talk to them regarding their ‘logical’ demand, police said.Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Islam said that they arrested them from the spot for making anarchy in the area. Police first tried to disperse the protesting students. But they tried to march towards the Vice Chancellor’s residence defying police bar, the police official said. The students would carry out subversive acts to the Vice Chancellor’s house, the OC said. Contacted, the VC Siddique said that the decision was taken to eliminate unequal competition between regular and irregular students, and discourage tutoring at coaching centres. However, the university’s decision spread a wave of protests among the students who failed to get into the Dhaka University. They have been demonstrating since, the VC said. On October 14, the university authorities decided not to allow any admission seeker to appear in its admission tests for first year honours courses more than once, sources said. The students have been on protest for more than a month seeking reinstatement of the second time admission test facility, they added.
