The government has conducted a survey by physicians and identified 14,88,008 disabled persons so far in the country till January 19, 2016.
State Minister for Social Welfare Promod Mankin said this on Thursday while replying to a question from treasury bench member M Israfil Alam in the Jatiya Sangsad.
He also informed the House that the last survey conducted in 2015-2016 financial year found 9,379 transgenders and 12,85,001 horijon people in the country.
“The government has undertaken various programmes including education, training, employment and development for disabled persons through social welfare department across the country,” Mankin said.
Replying to another question from treasury bench member M Mahbub Ali, the state minister said the government has undertaken a new programme for living standard development of the tea workers.
The government would also provide food grains among all the tea workers across the country under the programme for passing their retired life. Under the programme, a tea worker aged over 65 years (male) and 62 years (female) will receive food grains including rice-15 kg, pulse-3 kg, wheat flour-5 kg, edible oil-2 litre, potato-5 kg, soap-2 pieces equivalent to Taka 5,000 at a time, he added.
Besides, each worker also gets sari one piece and a lungi at the last installment, Mankin said.
