At least fourteen hundred female residential students of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have been suffering badly from water crisis since Tuesday evening.
The problem at two female halls appeared on the day when a motor, which is used to supply water to these halls discharging from underground, got burnt.
Meanwhile, the final examinations at different departments of the university have been postponed taking the prevailing crisis into consideration.
The pump which has been used to supply water to the First Ladies Hall and Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall of the university was burnt Tuesday evening upon which the burnt motor was sent to Dhaka for repairing.
Pump Operator Jakir Talukder confirmed the information when asked about the latest updates on the burnt motor issue.
Residential students of the university said that the SUST authority is supplying only drinking water to them from the nearby Border Guard, Bangladesh (BGB) camp and daily potable water from the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) pump once in a day.
“We are leading miserable life due to the shortage of adequate water supply in our halls. We couldn’t take bath, wash cloths and continue other necessary works for the water crisis,” said a residential female student.
First Ladies Hall’s Provost Assistant Professor Mahruba Sharmin Chowdhury said that they were trying to fix the problem as soon as possible.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Elias Uddin Biswas hoped that the motor would be repaired within few days upon which the water supply will also smoothen.
