At least 14 people died when two buses rammed into each other at Mulibari area of Sirajganj’s Saidabad Union, west of the Bangabandhu Bridge. Not less than fifty others were injured in the head-on collision at 5am on Sunday. The Rangpur-bound bus of Sabbir Paribahan from Chittagong and Azad Paribahan’s Dhaka-bound bus from Gaibandha were involved in the collision, said Hellal Uddin, OC of the bridge’s west-end police station. Of the victims, 12 died on spot including both the drivers. Two others succumbed to injuries on way their way to hospital. The Bridges Division, Fire Service and Police were involved in rescuing the passengers until 8am. The injured were taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, the town’s community clinic, Abhisina Clinic, Medinova and Moin Uddin Memorial Hospital. Sirajganj Sadar Hospital’s resident medical officer, Faridul Islam said 14 dead bodies have come in until 7am . He said 25 people have been admitted in the hospital with injuries. Deputy Commissioner Billal Hossain, SP Miraj Uddin Ahammed and Bridges Division Traffic Manager Lt Comm Mujahid Uddin have visited the accident site. A four-member committee has been set up to investigate the accident and submit their findings within 3 days, Deputy Commissioner Billal Hossain told bdnews24.com. The committee will be led by Additional District Magistrate Kamrul Hasan . ASP Ziauddin Talukder, Sadar UNO Ben Jon Chambu Gong and Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Nizam Uddin are in the committee. Hossain said the families of those killed would be paid Tk 10,000 to take away the dead bodies. He said the administration was monitoring the ongoing medical treatment of those injured.
