Staff Reporter :
Environment Department on Monday disconnected electricity lines from 14 factories in the capital’s Shyampur area as those are polluting environment seriously. The drive, led by its Director Rubina Ferdous, started around 1:15pm. Replying to a query of journalists, Rubina said, “We are here to conduct the drive as per the top court’s directive.”
She said, “The Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) and Air Treatment Plants (ATP) are must required for the factories which have liquid wastes. But these 14 factories have no ETP and ATP. So, we disconnected the electricity lines.”
When asked her about which are in the court’s order about such factories, the Director said, “Court’s order is to shut such factories. We are disconnected electricity lines so that those factories are becoming closed automatically in lack of fuels, she added.
She also said that her department will also conduct drive at 25 other factories after ending the court’s stay order on those factories for three months.
Metropolitan Director of Environment Department, Sohrab Ali, Executive Magistrate Md Maksudul Islam and Kazi Tamjida Ahmed also took part in the drive.
Meanwhile, local MP Syed Abu Hossain Babla tried to stop the drive, but the officials said him that they are working as per the court’s directive.
Abu Hossain Babla said, “Yes we must obey the court’s directives, in the same time we should consider the government’s image and the labours issue. Our government is labour-friendly. The laborers of these factories are here. I asked them to stay with peace. You (officials) should consider these matters.”
Replying Babla, Environment Director Rubina Ferdous said there is no chance of considering anything when we are here to implement the court’s directive.
Then Babla refrained and said the journalists that the drives will go on, because it is inevitable as per the court’s directives.
