One hundred and thirty nine schemes of Low Lift Pumps (LLPs) under the Minor Irrigation Development Programme are ready for operation in the next dry season in Sylhet district. Besides, three deep tubewells would also be put into operation, official sources informed.
The government had to spend about Tk 230 million for the said schemes which will help produce 12,000 tonnes of paddy every year.
Bangladesh Agricultural Dev-elopment Corporation (BADC) has implemented the programme in some less developed areas of different upazilas in the district.
The farmers will be able to collect water from the nearby Surma river, canals and other sources through power pumps for irrigating the Boro lands through pucca drains, an official said.
Required power lines have already been erected through Sylhet Palli Biddut Samity. About 250 farmers will be benefited in each of the projects, the official said, adding, at least 3200 hectares of land will get the facilities directly.
Talking to this correspondent, some farmers of Hatimnagar irrigation scheme in village Turukbag under Golapganj Upazila termed it as a great opportunity. They said massive croplands had remained arable during the dry season due to lack of irrigation facility. “Now we would be able to irrigate the fields of Boro paddy and other Rabi crops”, they added.
