A major programme has been taken up for bringing 135,440 hectares of land under Aus cultivation during the current Kharif-1 season in Sylhet Division.
According to the sources in the Sylhet Divisional Office of Additional Director of DAE of the total area, 45,820 hectares would be in Sylhet, 43,440 hectares in Moulvibazar and 39,500 hectares in Habiganj while 6680 hectares would be in the district of Sunamganj.
For preparing seedlings for the cultivation, farmers have started making seedbeds. It would continue till the end of April.
The target for setting seedbeds had been set at 6,772 hectares, said the Deputy Director of the DAE’s divisional office Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid.
It includes 2291 hectares in Sylhet, 2172 hectares in Moulvibazar, 1975 hectares in Habiganj and 334 hectares in Sunamganj district.
In the last year’s Kharif-1 season Aus paddy was cultivated on 134,024 hectares of land in 4 districts of the division.
Meanwhile, an incentive programme for 28,800 poor and marginal farmers against the last year’s 25,700 poor farmers in 28 upazilas of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts been taken up during this season for farming on 28,800 bighas of land. Each of the farmers is being given seeds and fertilisers free of cost. Already 75 per cent incentives had been distributed.
Of the total 9300 listed marginal farmers are in Sylhet, 8800 in Moulvibazar and 10,700 are in the district of Habiganj, the official added.
Upazila level committees, headed by the UNOs are distributing the incentives.
