A coal-laden truck flipped over and crushed a workers’ shed at Narayanpur in Chouddagram upazila of Cumilla district early Friday, killing 13 sleeping workers and injuring five others that made the environment extremely painful.
All the victims were the workers of M/s Kazi and Co. Brick Field in the district.
Of the deceased, 10 victims were from Mirganj and Shimulbari unions of Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district, reports our district correspondent quoting Abdullah Al Mahfuz, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chauddagram Police Station.
They victims are identified as Ranjit Chandra Roy, 30, son of Suresh Chandra Roy, Tarun Chandra Roy, 25, son of Manik Chandra Roy, Biplob Roy, 19, son of Ramproshad, Monoranjan Roy, 19, Shakkar Chandra Roy, 22, son of Sankar Chandra Roy, Dipu Chandra Roy, 19, son of Amal Charndra Roy, Amit Chandra Roy, 20, son of Kamakkha Roy, Minal Chandra Roy, 21, son of Dinesh Chandra Roy, Bikash Chandra Roy, 28, son of Khoka Chandra Roy, and Kanak Chandra, 34, son of Dhalu Roy, Md Masum, 18, son of Fazlul Karim, Md Mursalin, 18, son of Nur Alam, and Md Selim, 28, son of Jahangir Alam.
“Around 7:30am the truck was parked near the brick field to unload coal, when it suddenly flipped
over and crushed the shed housing labourers near Narayanpur in Chauddagram,” Police official said.
“Locals and emergency services arrived at the spot to conduct a search and rescue operation. The driver and helper of the truck are currently on the run,” witnesses said.
The truck overturned on the Dhaka-Chattogam highway and fell on the workers’ mess at the brick field around 5:30am when its driver lost control over steering, leaving 12 dead on the spot and three critically injured.
Among the injured, one died on the way to hospital. Rest two were admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
Cumilla Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Abul Fazal Mir visited the scene and expressed deep sorrow for the victims.
The Cumilla local administration and the brick field owner have donated Tk 20,000 and Tk10,000, respectively, to each of the deceased victims’ families, the DC said.
A four-member committee has been formed to investigate the accident, the DC said.
Meanwhile, after receving the deadly accident, the relatives and locals burst into tears at Pathanpara, Nijpara and Rajbari villages in Jaldhaka.
Nazia Sherin, DC of Niphamari district, told The New Nation on Friday evening, “The local administration vowed to stand with the long term financial aids to the victims’ families.”
Jaldhaka Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Socials Welfare official and concerned Union Parishad Chairmen were asked to provide lists of the victimized families, the DC said.
Hukum Ali, Chairmnan of Mirghanj union parishad said that a deep shocked atmosphere is prevails in the area.
