Highway deaths on rise: 13 more killed

Another 13 people were killed and 30 others injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj, Manikganj, Chittagoing and Dinajpur districts on Saturday, our correspondents’ report.
In Gopalganj, at least seven people were killed and 15 others injured in a head-on collision between a Benapole-bound bus of Ashik Sagar Paribahan and a Dhaka-bound microbus on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at Bhatipara area under Kashiani Upazila in the district in the morning.
According to report, one person died on the spot while 15 suffer injuries.
Later, six other injured victims succumbed to their injuries at Kashiani Health Complex while three other injured were undergoing treatment there, the SI said.
Five of the deceased have been identified. They are the microbus driver ‘Hanif’ from Faridpur, Babu Sheikh, Mijanur Rahman, Mehedi Begum and ‘Tania’.
In Manikganj, two persons were killed and five others injured when a truck rammed a Tempo at Garadia Bus Stand in Singair Upazila in the morning, said Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syeduzzaman.
The victims were identified as Tempo driver Sujan Miah, 28, and Meher Ali, 45, the OC said.
The Singair-bound truck rammed into the Manikganj-bound Tempo around 10:00am, leaving six people injured. The injured were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where two succumbed to death from their injuries.Two persons were killed and 10 others injured when a Cox’s Bazar-bound bus of Saudia Paribahan rammed a Chander Gari (old model vehicle) on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar road in Lohagara upazila in the afternoon, said Abdur Rahman, SI of Chiringa Highway Police Outpost.
The victims were identified as Mozammel Haque, 55, family planning officer of Lohagara upazila in Chittagong and Alok Dey, Meher Ali, 30, from Cox’s Bazar, the SI said.
The injured men were admitted into the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital immediately.
In Dinajpur, two persons were killed in different road accidents in Hakimpur upazila in the district in the evening.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, said Rezaul Karim, SI of the thana.
At least 32 more lives were lost on highways of different districts. Pushing the death toll on highways to 200.
