At least 13 people including six women were killed and 30 others injured in separate road accidents in Bogra, Tangail and Sunamganj districts on Wednesday.
In Bogra, six women were killed and 25 more people injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Mokamtala Kashipur on Bogra-Rangpur highway in Shibganj upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
Five of the deceased were identified as Syeda Monowara, 56, wife of Fazlul Bari, a resident of Mohammadpur in Dhaka, Doly Begum, 35, daughter of Naimuddin Naya Mia of Gabtoli upazila in Bogra, Doly’s mother Julekha Begum, 60, Akhtar Begum, 33, daughter of Afsar Ali of Shibganj upazila and Lina Khatun, 24, daughter of Latifur Rahman of Dinajpur district.
Sub-inspector Shamim Akhter, in-charge of Mokamtala Police camp, said the Dhaka-bound ‘Nabil Enterprise’ bus from Dinajpur collided with the bus of ‘Khalek Enterprise’ from Rangpur in the area around 12.30pm, leaving six women dead on the spot and 25 people injured. The injured were taken to different hospitals and clinics. On information, police and Fire Fighters rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to hospital morgue.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, said police seized the two buses but could not arrest anyone. Traffic on the busy road remained suspended for about half an hour following the accident. In Tangail, four people were killed and five others injured as a cement-laden truck turned turtle in Jokarchar area under Kalihati upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased are Sohel, 35, son of Bukai Miah of Samvupur village under Bera upazila in Pabna district, Sujan Miah, 38, son of Asadur Islam, a resident of Kamalpur village of Saghata upazila in Gaibandha district, Afsar Uddin Khan, 60, son of Kafil Uddin of Hasimpur-Chalunda village and Aminur Rahman, 35, son of Abdul Barik of Moghol village under Shibganj upazila in Bogra district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bangabandhu Bridge (East) Thana Asabur Rahman said the accident occurred when the Bogra-bound cement-laden truck from Narayanganj turned turtle and fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four dead on the spot and five others injured.
The injured were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital, the OC said. In Sunamganj, three people were killed and 15 others injured as a mini bus hit a roadside tree and turned turtle in Jatua area on the Sylhet-Sunamganj road in Chatak upazila of the district on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Shamim Ahamed, 20, of Duttarai village under Gopalganj upazila in Sylhet district, Mousumi Pal, 27, of Hasimpur village and Radha Rani Pal, 47, of Muktarpur village under Dirai upazila in Sunamganj district. Sub Inspector of Sunamganj Joykalas Police camp Shafikul Islam said the accident occurred at about 2 pm when the bus hit the roadside tree and plunged into a ditch as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving three passengers of the bus dead on the spot and 15 others injured. The injured were admitted to Koitak Upazila Health Complex and Osmani Medical College Hospital.
