13 held for buying votes, seized over Tk 4 lakh

At least 13 activists of BNP-led alliance were arrested for allegedly manipulating voters by giving them money from different parts of the capital between Sunday night to Monday afternoon.
The police in separate drives, also seized Tk 4,03,500 from their possession.
In Mirpur, at least six persons, including a woman, were detained from the city’s Paikpara in Mirpur area while they were buying vote on behalf BNP Mayoral Candidate Tabith Awal, said Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Salahuddin. Police also seized Tk three lakh from their possession, the OC claimed.
Meanwhile, at least two persons were detained from the city’s Shantinagar area when they were buying vote on behalf of local councilor candidate Anjuman Ara Begum, said Paltan Model Police Station OC Morshed Alam.
Police recovered Tk 27,000 from their possession, the police official said. The detained men were identified as Abu Sufian and Abu Taleb, the OC said.
Mainul Haque, OC of Hazaribagh Police Station said that Hazaribagh thana Jubo Dal Vice-President Md Alauddin was caught red-handed while buying votes with money in Ganaktuli area on Sunday night.
“He had with him cash Tk 25,500 when police detained him,” the OC said.
Mashiur Rahman, OC of Ramna Police Station said Md Masud was held with Tk 12,500 from Challishghar slum for buying vote.
“He was detained on Sunday night,” the police official said. SM Jahangir Alam Sarker, acting Deputy Commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that Firoz was detained with Tk 15,500 for Madhyapara in Khilkhet early on Monday.
“He visited voters’ houses to give them money,” he said, adding that the detainees would be subjected to legal action.
Another team of detective branch (DB) of police also caught red-handed a BNP activist along with Tk 15,500 from the city’s Nikunja area early in the morning, said the police official said.
The detained man was identified as Sheikh Nurul Islam, 34, activist of local BNP, he said.
At Rampura, a team of DB also detained a Jubo Dal man along with Tk 5,000 from the city’s Rampura area early in the morning, Rampura Police Station OC Mahbubur Rahman said.
