Country’s 80 percent or 13 crore people might get infected with coronavirus before the arrival of a vaccine if they do not become aware and follow health guidelines, fears a renowned virologist.
Prof Dr Nazrul Islam, former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), came up with the apprehension in an interview published in a vernacular daily on Friday.
He said there is a lack of awareness among people and they are not following proper health guidelines. “Many are roaming around with masks in their pockets. If this continues, country’s 80 percent people might get infected with coronavirus before a vaccine arrives,” he said.
The virologist said many asymptotic Covid-19 patients are roaming around freely and spreading

 the virus unknowingly.
He also said tests are not being carried out as per the need.
Nazrul underscored the need for ensuring help of law enforcers, so that people follow the health guidelines properly apart from raising awareness in this regard. “Some areas have been put under lockdown but most areas remain out of the purview. The aim of the lockdown is to restrict people’s movement and ensure that people wear masks and follow health rules.”
As of Friday, Bangladesh reported coronavirus cases and 1,677 deaths as there is no respite from the virus.
