The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued 13 young Rohingya women and arrested two suspected traffickers in a drive from a flat in the city’s Aftabnagar area on Sunday evening.
The women are about 18 years old, said ABM Faizul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police at RAB-3.
The arrested trafficking suspects are Kabir Ahmed, 40, and Md Imran, inhabitants of Teknaf.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Court Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari on Monday remanded the two accused for three days each when the Investigation Officer (IO) and Sub-Inspector of Badda Police Station produced them in the court.
The RAB seized a huge amount of fake passports, birth certificates, birth registration and passport forms, Faizul Islam said.
The victims were forced to work at bars and brothels in different countries, including Malaysia and Dubai, according to the RAB official said.
The accused have confessed to trafficking seven people abroad in December last year and five more this month, according to the RAB official.
“This gang mainly sells the young women to international traffickers abroad to employ them as sex workers,” he said.
The suspects managed the passports for the women using fake addresses with the help of “dishonest government officials”, he said.
The group swindle helpless young women displaced from Myanmar to Dhaka for trafficking, the RAB official said.
