129 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa defying ban

A mobile court in Chandpur district jailed about 129 fishermen of different terms for violating the ongoing ban on hilsa fishing in the rivers of both Padma and Meghna.
Some fishermen were also fined.
Executive Magistrate of the district administration and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) conducted the drives from October 7 to 27.
Asadul Baki, District Fisheries Officer of Chandpur said “The seized fishing nets were burnt, boats are under police custody, while some boats sank in the river.
District administration arranged to preserve the seized hilsa fish from rotting.
It may be mentioned that the government banned fishing, selling, storing, and transportation of all types of fish from Matlab Uttar area of the district to Char Alexander area for 22 days.
The 22-day ban on catching and selling hilsa for safe spawning of the fish started on October 7.
