1,222 martyred intellectuals in primary lists

The government approved a primary list of 1,222 martyred intellectuals who made supreme sacrifices for the nation in 1971, said Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huque on Sunday.
He said the list would formally be released this month.
The minister said the list was approved at the first meeting of the committee formed to make the list of martyred intellectuals.
Mozammel Huque said: “The lists of these 1,222 martyred intellectuals will be placed in the next meeting of the committee. It is likely to be approved there. An outline has already been prepared stating who will be considered as martyred intellectuals. In 1972, lists of 1,070 martyred intellectuals were published. Later, the postal department released commemorative postage stamps of 152 martyrs. So, the number of martyred intellectuals we have received is 1,222. We have given approval of the lists.”
On November 19 last, a committee for formulating the lists of martyred intellectuals was formed. Liberation War Affairs Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh was made the committee’s president. The Liberation War ministry’s additional secretary Md Shahidul Huque Bhuiyan is a member in the committee while deputy secretary Rathindra Nath Dutta is the member-secretary.
As the researchers-members, Dhaka University’s Prof Muntasir Mamun, Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee’s president Shahriar Kabir, Dhaka University’s professor Mesbah Kamal, Genocide-Torture Archive and Museum’s trustee Chowdhury Shaheed Quader, NIPSOM director Bayezid Khurshid Reaz and Genocide-Torture Archive and Museum’s researcher Gazi Salahuddin are there in the committee.
Besides, valiant freedom fighter Nasir Uddin Yusuf Bacchu and valiant freedom fighter Lt Col (Bir Pratik) Kazi Sajjad Zahir are there in the committee.
