The students of Eden Mohila College staged a demonstration on Friday in the city’s Azimpur area in protest against police action on DU-affiliated college students who arranged a sit-in program in front of the National Museum demanding reduction of session jam by taking of annual examinations and publishing routine immediately.
The students blocked the Azimpur Road with banners and festoons on Friday morning. With various slogans, they demanded reduction of session jam, immediate holding of annual examinations and publishing routine.
A procession was brought out from the college campus around 11:00am marched through city streets including Plassey intersection.
The protesting students said, they have been victims of tremendous session jam and irregular annual examinations since affiliation with Dhaka University.
Seeking anonymity, several students said that they were not even getting the nominal opportunities
they used to get when they were students of Eden College under the National University (NU).
On Thursday, the students of seven government colleges of Dhaka city, which were affiliated with the DU in February last, gathered at Shahbagh to join a sit-in program with several demands mentioned above.
Police surrounded the students from all sides to prevent any chaos by any quarter.
But at one stage, police used rubber bullets and tear shells when the students tried to get out of their venue. At least 10 students were critically injured in the clash.
Meanwhile, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) M Mazhar Ali, as a plaintiff, filed a case on Friday night accusing 1200 unidentified students on charge of obstructing police to perform their official duty, carrying out attack upon them, attempt to murder and conducting terror activities.
“A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station against 1000 to 1200 unnamed students on charge of obstructing police to do their duties during the demonstration,” said Abul Hasan, Officer-In-Charge (OC) of the police station
The 13 protesters, detained during Thursday’s scuffle, were handed over to the authorities of their respective colleges, he said.
Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Badrunnesa College, Government Titumir College, Kazi Nazrul Islam College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Mirpur Bangla College — were affiliated with the National University before shifting to Dhaka University in February this year.
