12 killed in road, railway accidents on 1st day of Eid holidays

Amid the increased volume of traffic on highways with the mounting pressure of homebound people, traffic fatalities marked a rise across the country with 12 being killed on Sunday, the first day of Eid holidays. According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, six people were killed and three others injured in a road accident at Bagherkanda Bypass in Sadar upazila in the afternoon. Three of the deceased were identified as Nasiruddin, 40, Pervin Akhter, 22, and Sarmin Akhter, 19. Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Fazlul Karim said the accident took place around 12 pm when a Mymensingh-bound bus from Muktagachha collided head-on with a human hauler (tempo) coming from the opposite direction, leaving one dead on the spot and eight people injured. The injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared four more dead. Another injured succumbed to his injuries later. In Brahmanbaria, a road accident at Ujanchar in Sadar upazila in the morning killed a mother and her twin children. The victims were identified as Rubina Akhter, 25, and her four-year-old twin sons – Sourav and Nirab. Delwar Hossain, an SI of Sadar Police Station, said the accident took place at about 6 am when the microbus the victims were travelling veered off the road and tumbled into a ditch. He said the victims on the way to their village home in Nabinagar upazila from capital Dhaka to celebrate Eid. In Gaibandha, an unknown woman was killed and 17 people were injured in a road crash at Bokchar in Gobindaganj upazila on Dhaka-Rangpur highway in the morning. Two people were killed in separate accidents on road and railway in Rajshahi district. An unidentified middle-aged woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a train in Darigharbona rail crossing in Rajshahi city in the morning. Witnesses said the woman was knocked down and crushed to death by a moving Khulna-bound train from Chapainawabganj while she was crossing the track at Darigharbona-level crossing around 8am. –UNB, Dhaka.
