12 killed in road accidents

UNB, Dhaka :At least 12 people were killed in separate road accidents in Mymensingh, Tangail, Jhalakati, Magura, Bogra and Sirajganj districts on Saturday night and Sunday.In Mymensingh, four people, including two members of a family, were killed and two others injured in two road accidents in Bhaluka and Nandail upazilas on Sunday.Two women-Saleha, 28, and Lota Begum, 45, of Shariatpur district — were killed as Dhaka-bound bus knocked the two women down while they were crossing the road around 7am, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station.In Nandail upazila, a man, Abu Siddique, 55, and his grandson Abu Raihan, 5, of Darila village in the upazila, were killed and their two other family members injured as a bus crashed into their motorcycle on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway in the morning.Police and witnesses said the accident took place when the speedy bus hit the motorbike while Siddique along with his daughter-in-law (son’ s wife) and her two children in Kanarampur area around 11:30am.In Tangail, three people were killed and 10 others injured in separate road accidents in Delduar and Mirzapur upazilas on Sunday noon.A CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with another three-wheeler near Lauhati Bridge in Delduar upazila, leaving six auto-rickshaw passengers, including, Mintu Miah, 70, injured.Mintu was rushed to Delduar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.Two private car passengers died on the spot and five people sustained injuries as the car collided head-on with a Tangail-bound truck from Dhaka on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Dulusa Mansur of Mirzapur area around 3pm, said Zobaidul Alam, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station. In Jhalakati, two motorcyclists died as a bus hit the motorcycle near Zero Point at Timirkathi in Nalchiti police station of Jhalakathi district at about 1:40pm yesterday.In Sirajganj, a housewife, Turna Khatun, 25, was crushed under the wheels of a bus and her husband Ujjal Sheikh and their son were injured when the bus knocked down their motorcycle at Sayedabad in Sadar upazila around 4pm yesterday. The injured men were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital.In Magura, a Narail-bound bus hit the bicycle of a youth, Yunus Mollah, son of Meher Mollah of Deshmukhpara village in Shalikha upazila, when he was going home from Arpara around 9pm on Saturday, leaving him dead on the spot.Outraged at the accident, locals vandalised the bus and set fire to it. In Bogra, Class-XII student Rakib Hasan Sumon, 20, of Bogra Govt Shah Sultan College and son of Mujibur Rahman of Bijoyghat village in Nandigram upazila, died on the spot as a motorbike hit him while crossing the Bogra-Natore highway in Bijoyghat of the upazila on Saturday night.
