Police arrested 12 top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Chattogram city unit during a drive at a house in Sugandha Residential Area in the port city on late Thursday night.
Among the arrestees, Mohammad Shahjahan is the Ameer of Jamaat’s port city unit while Nazrul Islam and Mohammad Ullah are the general secretary and organising secretary respectively, said Mizanur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (north zone) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police. “They sat in a meeting to plan subversive activities in the city,” he said, adding, “During the drive, police also recovered seven crude bombs, a good number of machetes and cleavers, and some papers containing their plans noted down.”
