The Fisheries Department has set up 12 beel nurseries in open water bodies in the district to boost production of natural fish resources this year.
District fisheries office sources said with the setting up of 12 beel nurseries, 482 tonnes more fishes will be produced by December next.
A total of 925 hectares of marshy land in seven upazilas of the district have been brought under the beel nurseries at a cost of Taka 8.80 lakh to increase natural fish production.
The beel nurseries were set up in Arial beel in Sadar upazila, Peri beel in Sarishabari, Mora Gangni beel in Melandah, Bhurbhuria beel in Madarganj, Kuri beel, Kukra beel, Siradanga beel and Jonti beel in Bakshiganj, Patharghata beel and Konai beel in Islampur and Sardarpara and Sapmari beel in Dewanganj upazila.
Madarganj upazila fisheries officer Jannat-A-Hour said fish fries of Rui, Katla and Mrigel varieties were released in the beel nurseries. “After five to six months when the fishes grow up to 9 inches or above, the beneficiary group could catch it,” she added.
With the setting up of the beel nurseries, over 3,000 people living adjacent to the beel areas will be benefited.
Anisur Rahman, a beneficiary of Bhurbhuria beel in Madarganj upazila, said, “we have formed beneficiary group to take care of the nurseries and in this way we would get maximum benefit.”
