In the UP poll violence, record 111 people have been killed so far. Of them, 40 belong to Awami League (AL), 12 to AL rebels, two to BNP, one to Jatiya Party and the rest to the other parties.
As a result, the countrymen have lost their confidence in the Election Commission (EC) for breaking the previous records of violence during the Union Parishad (UP) polls.
Since the violence continuous, there is no cessation of death, resulting in the loss of record 111 lives so far. Contrarily 88 were killed in 1988.
But the EC repeatedly claims that the number of death has decreased in poll violence this year.
At least 10 people were killed in the polls violence on May 28 during the fifth phase.
On May 26, Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujon) claimed that death in violence centering the ongoing Union Parishad elections broke all previous records.
Record 101 people were killed in the poll-related violence, reads a written statement issued by the civil society platform. Previously, at least 80 people lost their lives in violence in 1988, it said.
In the first four phases of the elections, a large number of candidates were elected uncontested through “nomination trading”. At least 193 candidates have been elected uncontested in the elections so far, the statement reads.
Later, Shujon Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar told reporters that fair elections are not possible under the incumbent Election Commission.
Meanwhile, columnist Syed Abul Moksud, who also attended the programme, termed the polls “an election of deaths”.
A total of 733 unions will go to polls on June 4 in the sixth and final phase.
