Chandpur Correspondent :
A total of 111 riverbank homeless families of Matlab Uttar, Matlab Dakhshin and Haimchar- all riverine Upazilas of the district, were given pucca houses for living in peace at their homes.
Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Mofazzol Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, MP as chief guest handed over the keys to the new pucca houses to the recipients at a function held on Saturday at Mohanpur under Matlab Uttar Upazila with DC Md Majedur Rahman Khan in the chair.
Of the houses, 58 were given to the people of Matlab Uttar, 23 for Matlab South and 30 for Haimchar Upazilas. Getting the houses, the recipients were happy beyond measure. This step was taken in order to fulfill the commitment of the Prime Minister given to people in the public meetings about providing homes to the homeless.
Talking to this correspondent, Rabeya Begum,38, of Jahirabad of Matlab Uttar said., her husband being very sick and bed ridden, she works household chores in other families and somehow maintains her ultra poor family. Her house was washed away by the Meghna river. She along with her family members lives elsewhere at the houses of her brother and she used to tolerate many rebukes and insults from people. Now the Government of Sheikh Hasina has given her a house to live in. The same views were echoed by another poorer homeless housewife Sajeda Begum, 40, of Kolakanda area of Matlab Uttar. Her husband is aged and can’t do any work due to sickness. She works household chores of other families in the neighbourhood and thus maintains her family of five members to keep body and soul together.. She also tolerated insults from others and neighbours as she was homeless and hearthless. Now she has also got a pucca house of her own. Thanks to Sheikh Hasina and Maya shaheb- she said with smiles in her face.
Other recipients of a pucca house are two minors- Shanto and Beauty, both siblings of 10 and 12 years, of Matlab South Upazila. Both are fatherless and motherless, they used to live in a broken and dilapidated thatched house given by their elderly grandfather. Rain waters leaked in the house. Now they are happy beyond measure to get a new pucca house of their own. Due to change of weather and climate, they all,, being the residents of the river bank areas, were the victims and their houses were damaged and they became homeless and living a miserable life..
