Eleven suspected militants were killed in three separate raids conducted by the joint forces in Patartek and Harinal areas of Gazipur and at Kagmara near Tangail district town on Saturday.
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police, SWAT, RAB, DB, Gazipur and Tangail Police jointly conducted these raids on the militant dens in the morning.
Among the dead, nine militants were killed in Patartek and Harinal areas in Gazipur while two others in Tangail. However, identities of all are yet to ascertained.
“The law enforcers first asked the militants to surrender but they didn’t respond to their call. Then they opened fire on the militants who also fired back. The three-hour gunfight left seven militants dead,” said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
The seven militants included ‘Neo JMB military’ commander Akash and four madrasa students, he said.
The minister said the operations have been successful as common people came forward to assist the law enforcers.
Akash became the second-in-command of Neo JMB after the death of Tamim Chowdhury in the Narayanganj raid on August 27.
Identities of two others could not be ascertained immediately.
Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said seven suspected militants were killed during gunfights with law enforcers in Patartek of Gazipur.
He said the militants blasted some 14 grenades during the gunfight that also left a law enforcer injured.
“Three firearms, a few sharp weapons and one gas cylinder were recovered from the militant den,” he added. Earlier in the morning, the joint forces cordoned off a two-storey house in Patartek area following information that suspected militants were staying there.
“The law enforcers, using a loudspeaker, asked the militants to surrender before them but they ignored the call,” said Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of DMP.
The joint team then conducted raid at the militant den at around 11:45am, triggering a gunfight that left seven militants dead on the spot, he said.
Militants rented the building owned by a Saudi expatriate Suleiman Sarkar about three months back, reported our Gazipur correspondent quoting locals.
In a separate raid, two alleged terrorists were killed in Harinal area of Gazipur, another suspected militant den, by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The killed militants are Touhidul Islam and Rashed Mia, both hailing from Narsingdi, said RAB-1 legal and media director Mufti Mahmud Khan quoting the house owner.
An AK-47 rifle, dozens of bullets, bomb-making explosive substances, four laptops, three machetes and a laminating machine were also recovered from the house, the RAB official said. Law enforcers found the two bodies in one of the units of the house, Mahiul Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police of RAB-1, told our Gazipur correspondent.
Acting on a tip-off that a divisional commander of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was staying at the house, law enforcers cordoned off the building in Lebubagan area in the morning.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the suspected militants opened fire ensuing a gunfight with police leaving two suspected militants dead, reposts our Gazipur correspondent quoting Khandakar Rezaul Hasssan Reza, officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station.
Locals said the single-floor house constructed recently was rented out a month ago.
Meanwhile, two suspected militants were killed in another gunfight with police and Rapid Action Battalion during a raid at a house in Kagmara area of Tangail town in the morning. Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting RAB. Acting on a tip-off that a gang of militants staying at the den in Kagmara area, a team of joint forces conducted the drive there around 11:00am, said Mahbub Alam, Superintendent of Tangail Police.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the militants opened fire on them. As the law enforcers retaliated, it triggered a gunfight, leaving the two suspected militants dead on the spot and two others injured.
