11 jailed, fined for netting hilsa in Meghna defying ban

A mobile court here on Tuesday jailed and fined 11 fishermen for catching hilsa in the Meghna River defying the government ban.
Sources said a joint team of police and Coast Guard, led by deputy commissioner Selim Reza, launched a drive at Meghna ghat in Gazipur upazila on Monday night and arrested four fishermen.
They also seized 8,000 metres of fishing net and two maunds of hilsa from the arrestees’ possession.
Meanwhile, district fisheries department officer Pritish Kumar Mallik said they launched another drive at Meghna ghat in Charfashion upazila on Monday night and arrested seven fishermen along with net and hilsa.
When they were produced before the mobile court at about 11:00 am on Tuesday, the court sentenced the seven fishermen to one year’s imprisonment each and fined four others Tk1,000 each.
The ban on catching and selling of the fish to ensure its safe breeding started on October 5 and it will continue till October 15.
