Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) claimed to have arrested 11 people for their alleged involvement in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card forgery from different areas in the city on Wednesday.
The arrested men are Jalal Hossain alias Sumon, 27, Shahjid Sohel, 36, Nur Alam, 45, Rana Mia, 24, Jahirul Islam, 37, Lutfar Rahman Alias Sujon, 42, Parvej Mia, 23, Wahed Hossain , 20, Abdul Alim, 40, Jahangir Hossain, 45, and Kamruzzaman alias Sumon, 30.
They also seized different types of special printers, 200 debit cards and
one credit card of different banks, 1000 ATM cards, six card punching machines, and huge card making equipments, RAB officials said.
Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director of Legal and Media Wing of the RAB, told the reporters on Wednesday, “A team of RAB-10 conducted separate drives following based on the information given by arrested Nur-e-Alam and arrested them.”
The gang have already withdrawn about Tk six crore by using fake ATM cards in last five years, the RAB official said.
They also hacked huge international ATM cards and prepared fake cards to withdraw money from the ATM booths, he said. The arrested men used to fish huge amount of money by cloning cards in alliance with dishonest shop employees at different shopping malls in the city, the elite force official said.
They cloned cards using devices were installed at different stores, he said. A stash of fake ATM cards and card making materials were seized from their possession, he added.
Jalal Hossain alias Sumon patronized the gang to collect raw materials of making cards, while Shahjid Sohel maintained the international communication, Mufti Mahmud said.
The involved shop owners of different shopping mall, also take commission from 20 to 25 for giving the chance to use the fake cards by dodging the captured pictures at ATM booths, he said. On March 10, a victim Jannatul Ferdous filed a complaint to with the RAB on charge of cheating money by using the fake debit cards.
