11 Feni cops, 2 others sued for allegedly threatening to put man in crossfire

A pick-up van driver filed a case against 13 people, including 11 policemen, in Feni accusing them of attempting to kill him in “crossfire” and implicating him in a narcotics case.
Gias Uddin Al Mamun filed the case with the court of Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Kamrul Hasan on Tuesday, said the plaintiff’s lawyer Gias Uddin Nannu.
Among the accused, six were identified as former Officer-in-Charge (OC) MM Murshed, SI Shahidul Islam, Delwar Hossain, Khorshed Alom, Mahbabul Alom Sarkar, and ASI Feroz Alom of Chhagalnaiya police station in Feni.
The rest were identified as constables Sukanta Barua, Moin Uddin, Nurul Amin, Serajul Islam, and Nurul Amin of the police station and police sources Abul Hashem and Abul Khayer.
Former OC Murshed is currently working at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), while SI Shahidul Islam at Bilaichhari police station of Rangamati. SI Delwar Hossain, Khorshed Alom, and ASI Feroz Alom are posted at Khushi police station Of Chittagong.
Besides, SI Mahbabul Alom Sarkar is currently posted at Sonagazi police station while Constable Sukanta Barua and Moin Uddin are at the office of the Feni Superintendent of police.
In the complaint, Gias Uddin Al Mamun stated that he was a pick-up van driver. On January 17, 2019, police sources Abul Hashem and Abul Khayer demanded Tk5 lakh from him, threatening to implicate him in a narcotics case while he was carrying soil from Kazir Bagh area in Feni Sadar upazila.
When Mamun refused to pay the extortion, the two police sources forcibly took him to Brothers Brickfield at Pathan Nagar area of Chhagalnaiya upazila on a microbus on the day.
Later, former OC MM Murshed reached the scene and blindfolded Mamun, and demanded Tk 5 lakh from him again. When Mamun refused to pay the extortion, the accused police official threatened to put him in a crossfire.
Informed, Mamun’s mother and wife agreed to pay Tk1 lakh in cash to OC Murshed. But the OC refused to take TK1 lakh and took Mamun to another place at Ballabpur village under Shuvopur union and tortured him there mercilessly.
At one point, former OC Murshed fired three rounds of bullets into Mamun’s right leg and took him to Feni General Hospital, assuming Mamun had died. Mamun was later referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors performed surgery on his right leg.
After being treated for seven days at CMCH, Mamun was implicated in a case under the Narcotics Control Act and was sent to jail, the case statement said.
Speaking to this correspondent, Mamun said: “I have been leading a miserable life since being paralyzed. I demand punishment for the accused policemen.”
