A top intelligent agency has identified 11 cattle markets as ‘risky’ this time following rivalry among the associate bodies of ruling party over taking lease of those.
The risky cattle markets are Hazaribagh, Sadek Hossain Khoka Play Ground, Postogola, Lalbagh Delwar Hossain Play Ground, Rahamatganj Play Ground, Kamrangirchar, Khilkhet and Khilkhet Bridge, Purbachal, Mirpur-6 and Rayerbazar.
All these cattle markets have been awarded to the leaders of AL’s city units and its associate bodies.
It said, an internal feud has already developed in the ruling party associate bodies centering lease of the city’s cattle markets. Several factions of ruling party-men are adamant to take control even after leasing out those that could lead to unwarranted incident like clash anytime.
The agency has already submitted a report in this regard to the Ministry of Home Affairs recently where it expressed discontent at the situation suggesting strong watch and vigilance to avoid unrest.
Jahangir Alam, 45, a leader of ward no-28 unit of Awami League, was shot dead by some assailants in front of his West Agargaon residence last year.
An internal feud in the ruling party over taking lease of the Agargaon cattle market was the reason behind the killing of Jahangir Alam, police sources said.
This year, the two city corporations have already set up 15 temporary cattle markets in the capital of which 10 are them under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and five under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Besides, the Dhaka district administration has set up seven temporary cattle markets ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
According to the report, many leaders of the ruling party’s city units and associate bodies have already taken control of these markets by forming a syndicate.
To secure their position, the city corporations have awarded them permission of temporary cattle markets as a section of influential AL leaders acted behind the scene to do so.
“This has displeased other factional groups who might start extra cattle markets besides official ones leading to bloody clashes amongst them,” it apprehends.
It added that such a rivalry could also incite snatching incidents on cattle laden trucks.
The agency has also provided a list of extortionists who may make cattle traders hostage.
Admitting the matter, a senior Home Ministry official told The New Nation on Friday that his ministry has already issued necessary directives so that a peaceful atmosphere prevail in cattle markets. “The law-enforcing agencies have been asked to show zero tolerance in this regard. Inelegance watch has been beefed in and around the cattle markets with inclusion of necessary security measures,” he added.
