Staff Reporter :
Thousands of passengers got stuck in a 10-kilometre tailback on the Dhaka-Tangail highway since early Friday as a portion of the highway subsided at Kaliakoir due to recent downpour.
Several hundred vehicles remained stuck in the tailback stretching from Kaliakoir of Gazipur to Mirzapur of Tangail as the highway subsided at Boardghar point.
Shahdat Hossain Selim, a Traffic Inspector of Tangail said, the construction work of four-lane and repair work of
potholes have been going on at different places, making the situation worse, he said.
The Dhaka-bound vehicles have been moving slowly while north Bengal bound vehicles from Dhaka have remained stuck on the highway, the inspector said.
Highway police and traffic police are trying to restore normalcy on the highway, added the police official.
Tahmina Begum, a passenger, said she along with their children started from Tangail at night, but still in jam at 9am. Her children are in immense sufferings.
Shamim Ahmed, a banker, said, “The jam is not a new problem for us. It is almost a daily phenomenon, which is very much undesirable.”
He also blamed the traffic mismanagement and delay on the road construction for the tailback and sufferings of the people.
