10,743-MW capacity 30 power plants under construction

The government is constructing 30 power plants with the generation capacity of 10,743 Megawatt (MW) for uninterrupted power supply across the country, a top official said.
“The current power generation capacity is 14,980 MW, covering 78 percent of the population in the country,” Director General of Power Cell under Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Engineer Mohammad Hossain told the New Nation on Saturday.
He said the government’s target is to increase power generation capacity to 24,000 MW by 2021 and with the completion of the 30 power plants the country will get constant supply of power.
Of the 30 power plants, 16 having the capacity of 6,703 MW would be set up under public initiatives, while 14 with 4,040 MW capacity under private initiatives, Eng Hossain said.
“The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken another 32 projects to increase power generation to 5,259 MW in future. The proposed power plants are now under tender procedure,” he said.
An official said the present government has installed 79 power plants since 2009 to raise the total number to 106. The government has also a plan to construct nine more power plants having capacity of 6,895 MW.
