Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, on Monday said the government would gradually establish 1072 more cyclone shelter centers in coastal areas to protect lives and property from natural disasters.
He said this while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member Begum Jebunnesa Afroz in the Jatiya Sangsad during the question-answer session.
“Till now, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved construction of 220 such centers to start soon,” he said adding, there are 3,851 cyclone shelters at the cyclone prone areas with completion of 100 more multipurpose cyclone shelters.
Moreover, the government has established 35 megaphones siren system at 35 districts to give prior warning to the people, he said.
The government is using IVR (Interactive Voice Response) technology for promoting awareness on disaster related information. Anyone can have access to the pre-recorded weather advisory and disaster early warning by dialing 10941from their mobile set on 24/7 basis, he added.
The Disaster Management Information Centers are working for exchanging natural disaster related information through online at district and upazila levels, he said.
The government is also working to train local representatives, journalists, imam, fishermen and others for creating awareness, he added.
