UNB, Dhaka :
A total of 1071 inmates are on death row in jails across the country, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan said on Sunday.
Asduzzaman was replying to a tabled question from Morshed Alam, MP (Noakhali-2) in the parliament.
Currently, the jails are holding 66,465 prisoners, including 19,713 sentenced to various jail terms. There are 45,593 under-trial prisoners, he said.
The government spends Tk 36.46 lakh on food for the prisoners daily Asaduzzaman said.

MP (Pirozpur-3), the junior minister said that Indian national Anup Chetia alias Golap Barua still is in jail here.
An application for his voluntary return to his homeland is now under process at the home ministry.
Answering to a question of Nurul Islam Sujan MP (Panchagar-2), the state minister said the government plans to raise police manpower by 50,000 to maintain law and order.
