1,000 students vow to eradicate child marriage

Over 1,000 students of Mithapukur Model High School at Mithapukur upazila town have vowed for launching a vigorous and meaningful social movement to eradicate child marriage and sexual harassment.
They took the vow at a workshop on ‘Prevention of Child Marriage and Sexual Harassment’ organised by Student Volunteers’ Group of the institution with assistance of upazila administration under the Upazila Governance Project at the school premises.
With Headmaster of the school Shah Habib-E-Azam in the chair, Mithapukur Upazila Chairman Zakir Hossain Sarker attended and addressed concluding ceremony of the workshop on Monday afternoon as the chief guest.

Commissioner (Land) Mamun-Ar Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Mithapukur Thana Humayun Kabir and Upazila Women Affairs Officer Seloara Begum addressed as the special guests.
District Coordinator of the Upazila Governance Project Jahangir Hossain, President of Mithapukur Press Club Hashem Mandal, Assistant Teacher of the school Shefaul Islam and student Nahid also addressed the workshop, among others.
Earlier, students and teachers of the school, their guardians, public representatives, adolescents, sociocultural and women activists, marriage registrars, religious leaders and NGO activists took part in a huge rally that paraded streets of the upazila town.
Students of the school took oath to launch vigorous social movement through creating mass awareness narrating negative impacts of child marriage, sexual harassment, dowry and repression to resist these social curses for building a better society.
Thanking part in the open discussion, the speakers narrated reasons and superstitions behind these social curses that have engulfed the society, especially the poorer section and backward people for decades together with creating unrest in family life and society.
They called upon all concerned, including the students, teachers and guardians, to set up an example of not arranging any child marriage to free the area from the curse through collective initiatives and rectifying their past mistakes.
The chief guest stressed for creating mass social awareness and asked the students and young generations to play due role along with public representatives, marriage registrars and administrations to prevent any attempt of arranging child marriage in future.
He expressed firm desire to ultimately free the society from the curse of child marriage and sexual harassment through collective initiatives, launching social movement and raising renaissance from every rural area of the upazila.
