100 turtles seized, 3 traders jailed

A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has sentenced jail to three traders for selling turtles in the capital.
The RAB-10 Magistrate Sarwar Alam passed the order on Friday morning, said Ashim Mollick, Inspector of Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the Forest Department (FD).
Of them, Pradip Chandra Das, 47, Ponir Chandra Das, 39, were awarded nine months simple imprisonment and Kartik Chandra Das was sentenced three months in jail.
Earlier, a joint team of the RAB and the FD conducted a raid in Sakhari Bazar of old Dhaka in the morning and seized at least 100 turtles weighing 160kg from their possession.
During that interrogation, the detainees said that they had been selling turtles for eight years, collecting those from Khulna, Narshingdi and Munshiganj, the forest official said.
