100 RMG workers fall sick after taking food

At least 100 workers fell sick after having food in a readymade garments factory at Kashimpur in Gazipur on Wednesday night.
The workers of Turag Garments & Hosiery Mills Ltd were provided with light refreshment at 8:00pm on Wednesday by the factory authorities. As the workers started vomiting, they were immediately rushed to local hospitals and clinics.
Mostafizur Rahman, Director of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 said all the affected workers were admitted to different local clinics and hospitals with symptoms of vomiting.
Md Selim Reza, Human Resources and Administration Manager of the factory said that some 200 workers were given banana, bread and eggs for light refreshment on Wednesday night. Some of the workers felt sick after having the snacks while others became sick early Thursday morning.
The authorities were compelled to shut down the factory for the entire day.
Morzina Akter, a worker of the factory, who also fell sick, said that within a few minutes of after having the food and drinking water, some of the workers fainted on the floor, started vomiting and feeling dizzy.
Moazzem Hossain, a senior medical officer at Bangladesh-Korean Hospital, said 25 workers were admitted to his hospital. Many of them reported problems in their stomach. He said the patients were given saline. But he could not say the reason behind the sickness.
Despite several attempts over cell phone, the factory’s Managing Director Hussain Mohammad could not be reached for his comments.
There are about 4,200 workers in this factory, said Mostafizur Rahman, Director of Ashulia Industrial Police. He said they rushed to the spot on information.
Additional police forces have also been deployed in the factory area to avoid any further untoward situation centering the incident, he said.
